Therefore, the boxes imply unity.”īefore showing me his collection of boxes, Fang took a porcelain statue out of a display cabinet. “The Chinese characters for ‘box’ and ‘combination’ are homophones. “I am fascinated by boxes because of their auspicious meaning,” Fang explained. Only those familiar with antique boxes, like Fang, know their true value. Not everyone would realize that the value of a box might be higher than that of a pearl. “The vendor sold a pair of fake chopsticks but I bought a genuine box,” said Fang. The vendor snickered at Fang’s gullibility, ignorant of the fact that Fang was not attracted by the chopsticks but rather by their lacquer box. Although Fang knew that they were imitations, he nonetheless bought them for 80 yuan (US$11.9). While Fang was wandering in an antique market in the early 1990s, he encountered a vendor peddling a pair of “ivory” chopsticks. Fang Binghai, 77, a collector of antique boxes and a member of the Shanghai Collection Association, has another twist on the old tale. The proverb has long carried the implication that the buyer’s judgment was poor and the seller was guilty of over-packaging. The tale is referred to in “Han Feizi,” an ancient Chinese text attributed to philosopher Han Fei. In the end, the buyer bought the jewel box and shunned the pearl. The box was made of lily magnolia, decorated with gems and the feathers of kingfishers, and infused with fragrance. There’s an ancient Chinese proverb about a businessman in the Chu state who asked a craftsman to make him a jewel box for an exquisite pearl he was going to sell. Fang Binghai, a collector of antique boxes. When pork chops are too thin, the skin will not hold the best color when they are seared. To bake the chicken more crispy, we use an oil shake. Shake and bake products, also known as Shake and Bake, come pre-prepared seasonings and breading for chicken and pigs. You can determine the cooking time based on the thickness of your meat. These pigs are now available in a baked pork chop. When pan-seared pork chops are seasoned, they are cooked until they are tender. The best time to cook bone-in pork chops is at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 25 minutes. If this happens, you can avoid it by baking your pork chops on a wire rack to raise the meat above any pooling liquids while also protecting the crispy coating. The juices expelled from the pork chops during baking may pool around the bottom of the chops, causing them to become soggy. Why Are My Shake And Bake Pork Chops Soggy? By combining a marinade or brine with the sear-roasting technique, you can ensure that your pork chops are flavorful, juicy, and juicy. Another method for roasting pork chops is to fry them in golden brown oil one side until crisp, then flip and place them in the oven. Marinating the chops in a brine before cooking them will give you the best results. When brine is applied to meat, it can help to pull more moisture into it. Rosemary, garlic, shallots, and olive oil are examples of herb and aromatic marinades. A marinade or brine adds moisture and flavor to the meat to help it retain its moisture and flavor, which adds an extra element of flavor. Make sure to brine or marinate your pork chops ahead of time to get the most out of them. Preheat the oven to 375F and bake the potatoes. Submerge the bag in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 hours. Pork meat should be cooked at 145 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure proper nutrition.ġ/4 cup olive oil, garlic cloves, and thyme, or 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, soy sauce, and balsamic vinegar It is critical to coat each pork chop thoroughly before placing them in the refrigerator. The only way to tell whether the meat is done is to use a meat thermometer. If you’re going to serve chicken, make sure to put some chicken stock on top. By seasoning, you can seal in the juices and keep your chops tender while cooking them. If you want a juicy chop, you must first sear it on the stove and then transfer it to the oven. Marinating them in acid, oil, herbs, and spices will do the trick in a matter of minutes. Pork chops are frequently described as bland and tasteless by their detractors. When cooked, let the pork chops rest for 5 minutes before serving to keep them juicy and tender. Place the pork chops in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 145F. Sear the pork chops on both sides until they are lightly browned. Generously season the pork chops with your favorite spices and herbs, then add some oil to the skillet. Preheat the oven or a non-stick skillet to medium-high heat. The internal temperature should reach 145F before removing them from the heat. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the pork chops throughout the cooking process. If the chops are much thicker, you can slice them in half horizontally. Start by selecting pork chops that are no more than 1-inch thick. Cooking pork chops that are juicy and tender is easy to do. Demonic Empowerment: Having the Spirit of Vengeance transferred into him by Johnny Blaze, Robbie was granted supernatural powers that he can channel in his human. And by "drives," I mean fights and kills. The main thing is, there, I'm just a passenger. But he blames himself for the experience and remains torn between his desire to atone for his mistakes and the Rider's thirst for vengeance. On the flip side, he used to be reckless and uncaring, as he sold his soul to the Devil to save his brother's life from a gang attack. The innocent are spared even if they attack him, as shown when Ghost Rider spares Quake even though she doesn't think of herself as a good guy. However, he only kills those who truly deserve it. Reyes is absolutely brutal in his methods, even torturing and executing his victims after they've already been subdued. ~ Robbie to Phil Coulson on his "habit" of killing evil doers. His murder spree gained him a dreaded reputation, and made the Ghost Rider a feared symbol in Los Angeles, with his story being told and his image being sprayed painted on walls. This included members of the terrorist group Watchdogs, the Fifth Street Locos, a corrupt cop, councilman Roger Perez, and the pedophilic school teacher Thomas Wright. Robbie then used his demonic powers to track down and bring vengeance upon those he deemed guilty and deserved death. Robbie decided to not tell Gabe of how he survived, as he feared that Gabe would not able to understand, and Eli was later sent to South Ridge Penitentiary on charges of attempted murder. It was Johnny Blaze a demonic being with a flaming skull, and touched Robbie, who transformed into the Ghost Rider. Reyes said yes, and a moment later he was alive again, and the stranger came to him. Robbie died upon impact, but heard a voice through the darkness, asking him if he wanted to avenge both his own death and to get revenge on those who harmed Gabe. His last thought was to call for help to anyone who would listen, God, or someone else to save Gabe, as he blamed himself for the incident. Gabe's injuries caused him to lose the ability to walk, as Robbie was thrown from the car, flying into the air with his body covered in bullet wounds. Reyes used his driving skills to attempt to escape the gang, but the gang caught up with them and fired at the car, causing it to crash. A group of Fifth Street Locos pulled up in front of their car, and they attacked the brothers, throwing a Molotov cocktail that caused the Hell Charger to be engulfed in flames. He was caught by Gabe, and invited his brother to join in the race, and they went cruising around the neighborhood. One day, Robbie decided to steal his uncle's car and take it for an illegal drag race in Los Angeles. Whatever was inside him, he passed it into me. I was alive again, and you're right, there was someone there when I came to. Despite dropping out of school, Robbie took a job at Canelo's Auto and Body, becoming an expert mechanic. He was raised in Los Angeles by his uncle, Eli Morrow alongside his brother, and dropped out of Garfield High School during his junior year. Roberto "Robbie" Reyes is the son of unnamed parents, and is the older brother to Gabriel, and his parents died of at an unknown time. He is portrayed by Gabriel Luna, who also portrays Tommy Miller in The Last of Us. He was originally thought to be the first character in the MCU to take on the mantel of the Ghost Rider, but it's later revealed he is the second, the first being Johnny Blaze (who gave Robbie his powers in order to save his brother, and get revenge on those who killed him). Although he will kill criminals instead of bringing them in, which is something a hero would not do, he states he tries and lives a by a code to only kill those who are evil. and protect innocent people like his brother. though in reality he is only trying to get rid of crime in L.A. He is often confused of being a villain by S.H.I.E.L.D. Roberto "Robbie" Reyes (also known as the Ghost Rider) is the anti-heroic deuteragonist of the fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ~ Robibe explaining how he made his deal to Johnny Blaze. Then I heard a voice, asking me if I wanted a second chance, did I want to punish those who hurt my brother, did I want to avenge my own death? I answered yes, more than anything yes. I died, and there's nothing, there's just darkness. In contrast, antivirus is an out-of-date term that software makers still use because viruses, Trojan horses, and worms were huge, attention-getting threats in the 1990s and early 2000s. Although antivirus firms constantly update their detection systems to outwit crypting services, they’ll never be able to keep up with malware makers intent on getting through.Ī quick terminology primer: The word malware just means “bad software” and encompasses anything that runs on your computer with unintended and usually harmful consequences. It's insufficient for a security app to just protect against a single set of known “viruses.” There is a potentially infinite number of malware variations that have been crypted-encoded to look like regular, trusted programs-and that deliver their system-breaking goods once opened. Why we don’t recommend a traditional antivirus suite For guidance, check out our full guide to setting up all these security layers. You should avoid downloading and opening email attachments unless you know what they are. You need to be mindful of what you download and to download software only from official sources, such as the Microsoft App Store and Apple Mac App Store, whenever possible. You also need secure passwords, two-factor logins, data encryption, systemwide backups, automatic software updates, and smart privacy tools added to your browser. No antivirus tool, paid or free, can catch every malicious bit of software that arrives on your computer. Over the years, we’ve also spoken with security experts, IT professionals, and the information security team of The New York Times (Wirecutter’s parent company) to filter out the noise of the typical antivirus table-tennis headlines: Antivirus is increasingly useless, no, actually it’s still pretty handy, no, antivirus is unnecessary, wait, no, it isn’t, and so on.Īlthough in any category we usually test all the products we’re considering, we can’t test the performance of antivirus suites any better than the experts at independent test labs already do, so we relied on their expertise.īut ultimately, relying on any one app to protect your system, data, and privacy is a bad bet, especially when almost every antivirus app has proven vulnerable on occasion. We also read up on the viruses, ransomware, spyware, and other malware of recent years to learn what threats try to get onto most people’s computers today. We spent dozens of hours reading results from independent labs like AV-Test and AV-Comparatives, feature articles from many publications such as Ars Technica and PCMag, and white papers and releases from institutions and groups like Usenix and Google’s Project Zero. Windows Defender, Microsoft’s built-in tool, is good enough for most people. The “best antivirus” for most people to buy, it turns out, is nothing. And after all that, we learned that most people should neither pay for a traditional antivirus suite, such as McAfee, Norton, or Kaspersky, nor use free programs like Avira, Avast, or AVG. We set out to do a standard Wirecutter guide to the best antivirus app, so we spent months researching software, reading reports from independent testing labs and institutions, and consulting experts on safe computing. If Clannad weren't so obviously manipulative, it might be a better series. yeah, don't watch this show, it'll make you rage. Those who think that female characters should actually resemble, you know, real people. Those who watch anime with their brain switched on will find this series trying. Why would a so-called delinquent suddenly take up this project of helping a random girl he's never met before? Why does he find her interesting? What is the point? ĮNJOYMENT: Obviously higher if you're a moe fan, but those who derive little enjoyment from watching cute girls doing cute things might find this series rather trying. We get no insight into his motivations at all. why he even bothered with/cared about Nagisa et al. It's also hard to understand Tomoya's motivations at the start of the series, i.e. Their childish and insecure natures (especially early in the series) make for unrealistic characters - and therefore compromise this show's unrelenting attempts at making us care about them. not to mention the fact that Fuuko, Kotomi and Nagisa, at least, sound at least half their age. Kyou's tsundere-ness, Fuuko's quirkiness, Nagisa's unending sweetness, etc. All of them (the female ones, anyway) exhibit some degree of fanboy-pandering. Few of the characters get much development. ĬHARACTER: This is probably the greatest problem I have with Clannad, and again, it's thanks to the source material. Unfortunately, all the female characters sound like babies. SOUND: Evocative without being overdramatic, for the most part. If anything, this aspect of Clannad makes me despair, because I can think of a lot of better anime series that deserve to have this sort of budget. Squishy moe character designs may not be everyone's cup of tea (Sanae looks barely older than Nagisa), but again, that comes with the territory. ĪRT: High budget, great production values and art direction. A story about a girl with Mysterious Anime Disease who has the intellectual capacity of a child? Sorry, it's not working for me. I mean: a story about a girl who is shy and has trouble making friends? Yeah, cool, you can watch Kimi no Todoke or something. Still, the outlandish (one word: Fuuko) and emotionally manipulative plot elements (most of the backstories that were explored) weakened what might otherwise have been a sweet, unpretentious slice-of-life drama/romance. with, given that it was based on the original VN plot. STORY: To be fair, the anime didn't have much to work Is this too harsh? Let's look at the individual components that MAL expects us to rate anime by. It expects us to have genuine emotional reactions to the 'blossoming relationships' between our bland protagonist and these excuses for characters. It expects us to care about these infantile, one-dimensional characters. This show expects us to believe that teenage girls act like five-year-olds. Unfortunately for this show, this means that it ends up being utterly contrived, unrealistic, and outright stupid. Here's the central problem with Clannad: it wants to tug your heartstrings, so it doesn't think about anything else. As he attempts to help each girl overcome her respective obstacle, he begins to realize life isn't as dull as he once thought. Claiming he has nothing better to do, he decides to help her achieve this goal along with the help of four other girls.Īs Tomoya spends more time with the girls, he learns more about them and their problems. Tomoya learns Nagisa has been held back a year due to a severe illness and that her dream is to revive the school's drama club. Eventually he concedes and befriends her. However, Tomoya finds he is noticing Nagisa more and more around school. Nagisa claims they are now friends, but Tomoya walks away passing the encounter off as nothing. He soon discovers the girl's name is Nagisa Furukawa and that she exclaims things she likes in order to motivate herself. Without warning she exclaims "Anpan!" (a popular Japanese food) which catches Tomoya's attention. One day while walking to school, Tomoya passes a young girl muttering quietly to herself. Along with his friend Youhei Sunohara, he skips school and plans to waste his high school days away. Tomoya Okazaki is a delinquent who finds life dull and believes he'll never amount to anything. It involves memorising at least 320 basic routes, 25,000 streets within those routes and about 20,000 landmarks and places of interest. This is a test of memory and is one of the most difficult tests in the world to pass. In order to become a London taxi driver, would-be cabbies have to pass ‘The Knowledge’. To do this, they called on London cab drivers and some serious brain imaging. Let me tell you a true story …Ī bunch of neuroscientists wanted to explore how brains can change. The things you do, the people you spend time with, every feeling, thought, and automatic experience will influence the wiring of your brain to make you who you are and to influence who you can become. A regular practice of mindfulness, for example, will increase the activity of genes that have the capacity to soothe a stress reaction in the heat of a moment, ultimately making you more able to deal with stress.Įverything you experience will alter the physical structure of your brain in some way. It also seems to reach into our genes (the tiny atoms in the DNA inside the nuclei of neurons) and change the way they function. It’s because throughout our childhood, we sing the alphabet song and have it sung to us so many times, that the relevant neurons are repeatedly activated enough to eventually form rock solid connections.Įxperience doesn’t just effect change by creating new connections and strengthening existing ones. It’s not because we were born baby geniuses with a cute alphabet jingle imprinted into our brains. This is why, for example, we can recite the alphabet without thinking. Repeating or prolonging an experience will keep the connections between neurons strong and ensure that they stay. Every time they are activated, they are elevated a little in the order of importance. The space is reserved for the neurons that you need the most – the ones that will best support you given the life you’re living.Įvery time we have an experience, the corresponding neurons are activated. You can’t grow the edges of your head so your brain occupies some precious real estate. This withering away is normal and healthy and is one way the brain grows into its most efficient self. The neurons that aren’t as needed will eventually wither away. The more connected the neurons, the stronger that area of the brain, the more responsive and effective it will be. The neurons that are connected to your immediate experience – what you are feeling, thinking, seeing, sensing, doing, experiencing – will fire and new connections will start to form within minutes. The ones that are will depend on the experience you’re having. About 100 billion neurons are waiting and ready to act, but not all of them will be recruited. Being human is complicated and our brain drives all of it – it’s no wonder we are still discovering its secrets.Įvery time you have an experience, the relevant neurons switch on and start firing. As this happens, neural connections get stronger and new synapses start growing.Įven as you read this, sparks are flying in your head. Different neurons are responsible for different parts of our experience, whether it’s eating, feeling, sleeping, sensing threat, firing up, falling in love, spelling, laughing, remembering, learning, nurturing – you get the idea. How does it work?īetween the walls of our skulls, billions of neurons (brain cells) work together to shape us into the humans we are. Our experiences are the fuel for this shaping and everything we see, feel, experience, sense and do is slowly but surely changing the architecture of our brains, sending gentle instruction on how they can build to best support us. It is constantly shaping itself to be the best one it can be for us. We now know that just isn’t true.Įach of us has a brain that is designed to be malleable and plastic and open to our influence. Up until the last decade or so, it was thought that the brain stayed fairly much the same and wasn’t open to influence or change. Just think about that for a minute: You have incredible capacity to change your brain through your experiences. The implications for all of us are profound.Īt the heart of the research is the finding that experience changes the brain. The research around it has caught fire and the findings are powerful. It’s called experience-dependent neuroplasticity. The message is real and comes fortified with some serious science. What you focus on is what becomes becomes powerful. The dual-panel interface puts the intricate and hard-to-use interfaces to a shame and makes it so much easier to edit, delete, add and delete files. Students in their first part of DVM training are advised by the VSTP Mentoring Committee on selecting a faculty mentor, research opportunities, and how to prepare for a variety of career paths. This award is a wonderful recognition of that success and helps us to continue mentoring leaders of the future.”Īt UC Davis, VSTP students complete their first two years of DVM education, then step into their PhD training, where they are guided by a faculty mentor during their dissertation research. “For the past two decades, our program has generated a number of veterinary scientists who are now leaders in academia, government and industry. “Having this additional source of funding opens new opportunities to expand recruitment,” Chen said. The funds will provide nearly $250,000 annually during the five-year award period. Xinbin Chen, director of the VSTP, said this NIH award allows UC Davis to expand its VSTP training, including for five new recruits this academic year – one of whom is Griffin. “We are proud to be one of the institutions to steward these grants and we're excited to see the future achievements of the student grant recipients.”ĭr. “This is an important moment as it shows that veterinary medicine is receiving recognition as a leader in health overall, not just animal health," said Dean Michael Lairmore. UC Davis was one of only three veterinary schools selected. This was the first time that the NIH has granted the award to colleges or schools of veterinary medicine as the lead institution to support students in a dual degree DVM-PhD program. The VSTP got a huge boost this past fall for its 20th anniversary when it received the prestigious National Institutes of Health Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) award. UC Davis Receives NIH Grant to Expand Recruitment of Future Scientists Bill Culp from the UC Davis veterinary hospital and clinicians at UC Davis Health. She is currently focused on creating a novel in vitro system to study canine osteosarcoma, working closely with Dr. Griffin was admitted into the program where she is now in her second year of immunology doctoral studies, working under the mentorship of Dr. This program enables DVM students to pursue a PhD concurrently, providing them with a dual degree and training them as the next generation of veterinary researchers. As she prepared for veterinary school, she began applying for the school’s highly competitive Veterinary Scientist in Training Program (VSTP). Griffin was in the right place to establish cross disciplinary connections. That experience showed me I wanted to pursue immunology, but also have a reputation in the engineering field to build valuable collaborations.” “I really started to understand then how research could complement veterinary medicine and how veterinarians could lend a unique perspective to human medicine. “I learned to work with stem cells and how to decellularize animal tissue to use as a biomaterial for regenerative medicine in humans,” said Griffin. Leigh Griffiths in his cardiovascular tissue engineering lab, collaborating with bioengineers on a xenogeneic scaffold development. But it was during her sophomore undergraduate year at UC Davis that she realized by combining research with her clinical interests in immunology that she could provide a bridge between animal and human medicine.Īt the time, she was working as a veterinary technician in the Large Animal ICU at the veterinary hospital and with veterinary cardiologist Dr. Katie Griffin has always been drawn to helping others – of two- and four-legged species. This is the first year for UC Davis to receive both of these multi-year sources of funding. UC Davis prepares the next generation of veterinary researchers with help from prestigious grants such as the NIH Medical Scientist Training Program award and the NCI T-32 Comparative Oncology Training Program grant.
